Whether you are looking for a CranioSacral Therapist for yourself as a pregnant mother (or postpartum one) or your baby, you will want one that is calm, patient, and skilled at working with your growing baby.
Benefits of Treating Moms and Babies
Bringing life into the world is such a wonderful thing. It doesn't always feel that way, and aches and pains of pregnancy can bring you down. There are little ways to get relief in healthy ways. CranioSacral Therapy is one of the limited choices for relief. It is a non-invasive, light touch bodywork that can be done throughout pregnancy and applied to baby straight away. For pregnant mothers it can bring relief from headaches, sciatic pain, nausea, and so much more. Sessions at SLO Cranial will help you mentally and physically prepare for childbirth and connect to your baby. Outcomes are improved so much so that Sandra DeGroot (RN, CNM, MSN, CAPT, Nurse Corps USN) went on record to say that " it is essential for CST to be integrated into mainsteam hospital practice". This was after she implemented CranioSacral therapy (CST) at the Naval hospital with Carol McLellan (CST-D) as the CranioSacral therapist.
Babies can come into this world from a not so ideal birth, have issues with breastfeeding, tongue-tie, lip-tie, torticollis, phagiocephalagy, colic, digestion issues, "failure to thrive", poor motor coordination and other non ideal issues. CST is gentle enough for a newborn with a skilled practitioner and can help these issues listed above and so much more. CranioSacral Therapy help with easing and transitioning to being outside the womb as well as easing any tension patterns from the journey.
How Does CranioSacral Therapy work?
CranioSacral Therapy is one of the few therapies that is gentle enough for a newborn and reaps so many benefits. CranioSacral Therapy helps facilitate positive changes by releasing tension patterns within the fascia and meninges- which is the 3 layers of membrane that surround the brain and spinal cord. This allows the central nervous system to perform at its best and helps align the body so it can work better. This is done by gentle touch and holds that allows the body to unwind and release tension patterns and restrictions.
What are sessions like?
Sessions will look different from family to family, and progressively change as the child ages. CranioSacral therapy is done while fully clothed. The office is a comfortable, quiet, and peaceful.
Pregnant mothers should be wearing loose, comfortable clothes. She will be on a massage table with supports for a semi-supine (a relaxed seated position) and for side-lying. A new mom can come in and be treated with her baby as well.
Session for baby will look different as they age. It can be done while the baby is held or breastfed by the parent, held by the practitioner, or resting on the table. As the baby is more alert and older, toys maybe used to distract the child as the practitioner works around the child.
